Chinese Whispers |

Article by Michael Finn A communication signal or version of things is released and invariably undergoes a metamorphosis, as it is passed on. What then of truth, history, eyewitness accounts, or any reproduceable media whatsoever? The internet has now famously highlighted this ‘tendency toward distortion’ especially regarding print and images. My new rule of thumb is to ‘not necessarily trust a reproduceable item,’ out of hand. Authenticity is a cloudy and murky matter nowadays. From items circulating in cyberspace to interpersonal communiqués, to the entire ‘repressed memory’ controversy; in fact, down to the very nature of memory itself, all phenomena undergo the filtering process, fondly described as ‘Chinese Whispers’. Chinese Whispers influence our relating styles, responses, belief systems, and hence our ‘spin’ on life, decision making processes and the gradual evolution of the ‘inherent self’ – which itself goes through a whispering metamorphosis. |
